Roots of Health Disparities – webinar series :: MARPHTC



This two-part series explores concepts such as the social determinants of health and cultural competency, compares health disparities to health care disparities, and examines the consequences of these issues to society. Also discussed are ways to promote cultural diversity and approaches to reduce health disparities. Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this webinar series, participants will be able to:

  • define health disparities;

  • list the Social Determinants of Health; and

  • describe cultural competency and ways to promote cultural diversity.

Date and Time: All webinars will take place Tuesday, 11 a.m.–noon Eastern. Webinar 1: June 22, 2021 Webinar 2: June 29, 2021

Location: Online. Information to access the course will be sent upon registration.

Target Audience: This presentation is appropriate for public health practitioners with varying professional experiences and diverse educational backgrounds. Continuing Education Credit: Continuing Education credits for certified public health professionals (CPH-CE, 2 hours) and CHES (2 entry) are available. To receive credit, participants must attend all webinars from beginning to end and complete an evaluation; no partial credit will be given. Instructor: Abi Fapohunda, DrPh, MPH, MS, is a trained epidemiologist and health educator. She has spent the past 20 years as an independent consultant, conducting needs assessments and program evaluation on the effectiveness of numerous community-based initiatives related to health disparities in both behavioral and physical health, including nutrition, smoking cessation, HIV/AIDS, and oral health. Fapohunda teaches part-time in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Africana Studies and has conducted several studies among African Americans and Africans in the diaspora and on the African continent. The focus of her current research is African immigrants and refugees experience during the COVID-19 pandemic; she conducted a survey to explore factors that contribute to a healthy community for Black immigrants.

Technology Requirements: This interactive webinar series is presented through the Zoom Internet-based platform. A computer with high-speed internet connection and the ability to download and run this platform is required. Basic functionality, including the use of a feature to type in questions, will be reviewed during the training. We suggest using a headset or webcam with microphone to best engage with the presenter throughout the training. Be sure to connect your speaking device to your computer before you enter the virtual webinar room. Trying to connect your speaking device after you enter the room may cause Zoom to not recognize the device and render it unusable. How to Register:

  3. Click the "Enroll" button under Course Registration at the bottom of the page.
