The Community Need Index (CNI) was designed by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) to identify communities that are in greater need relative to others. The index uses indicators such as poverty, unemployment, and gun violence to identify the census tracts that have the highest levels of need.
Previous reports explored community need in the suburbs and the city. New analysis uses updated methodology to explore relative need in communities throughout the county. The recent analysis also places particular emphasis on the relationship between community need and race of residents.
